The 30th of January marks five years since the world lost SOPHIE Xeon—the visionary British producer, songwriter, and DJ who left her mark on pop music by making it more electric.
When SOPHIE first emerged with tracks like “Bipp” and “Lemonade,” the music was often described as “plastic,” “metallic,” or “hyper-synthetic.” At the time, it felt like a transmission from a distant future. Today, that future has arrived. The genre she helped pioneer—hyperpop—has moved from the underground fringes of SoundCloud to the center of the global charts.
She concealed her identity early in her solo career, coming out publicly shortly before her debut studio album ‘Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides’ (2018) released. That album ended up being nominated for a Grammy. Throughout her career that ended too soon, she has collaborated with the likes of Madonna, Charli XCX, Vince Staples, Cashmere Cat and Flume.
She died tragically on the 30th of January 2021, at the age of 34, after she fell from the rooftop in Athens while attempting to take a picture of the full moon. Her second studio album ‘SOPHIE’ (2024) released post-humously in 2024.
