In a decisive move that sets it apart from other major music platforms, Bandcamp has officially announced a ban on AI-generated music. On 13th of January 2026, the company unveiled its new policy, reinforcing its commitment to serving musicians first and foremost.
The announcement comes at a time when the music industry is grappling with a massive influx of “AI slop.” Recent data from services like Deezer suggested that as much as 34% of new daily uploads were AI-generated, often clogging discovery algorithms and diluting the royalties meant to be paid out to human creators.
According to the new policy, Bandcamp specifically forbids “music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI”, as well as any use of AI to impersonate a specific artist or to replicate their sound. The company also emphasised that their goal is for fans to have confidence that the music they find on Bandcamp is authentic and created by humans, not robots.
We wholeheartedly support this initiative, believing that creative work should be valued and protected. As curators, we are hoping not to drown in the sea of low-effort, AI-generated music that will make it much harder for us to find the music that truly matters and recommend it to you.
Bandcamp went a step further than Deezer, which six months ago promised to exclude AI-generated music from its recommendations, as well as clearly labelling it. We cannot commend them enough for their effort and hope to see more streaming services and music stores follow suit.
